“Casa Mezcal: Arte, Musica, Comida, Cine” is the joint vision of Guillermo Olguin, a well-known Mexican painter, and the young entrepreneur and restaurateur, Ignacio Carballido.
The bar integrates art, traditional Mexican food and of course, mezcal. Casa Mezcal integrates three key factors which separates it from other New York spots – the combination of art, food, music, cinema and drink. Artists from all corners of the world will be showcased including writers and poets, the independent cinema, and international music. A gallery will display art with an agenda that includes both launches and private parties. Casa Mezcal creates a special backdrop of an all-encompassing experience and coupled with a warm, familiar atmosphere.
Although Casa Mezcal serves traditional Oaxacan – a southwest region of Mexico – food with exotic dishes such as grasshoppers with melted cheese and tacos de cazuela with handmade tortillas; it also caters a more extended menu with a combination of American dishes and ingredients. It is basically an extension of the already successful Café El Portal.
The spirit is mezcal, a five hundred year old spirit, not previously recognized, rooted in historic spirit and tradition. It’s the first distilled drink made by the indigenous people in the south of Mexico. This sipping drink comes from the agave plant which takes nine to seventeen years to mature. The result is a smooth drink full of minerals.
The house of Mezcal embraces the tradition of this ancestral beverage, delivering its unique flavors, images and scents to those who fall under its spell....

About The Red Hook Ramblers:
Brooklyn's premier dixieland band, the Red Hook Ramblers first appeared on New York's revitalized traditional jazz scene in 2005 and rapidly found themselves among its leading torchbearers. They have been repeatedly honored to perform at the Louis Armstrong House Museum to celebrate Satchmo's birthday and have been interviewed and featured on New York radio and television stations, as well as on Time Out New York's website. The Ramblers opened for Squirrel Nut Zippers during their Fall 2009 tour, and performed at the Meilemer Jazz Festival outside of Zurich as part of their own tour of Switzerland in the Spring of 2010. The band has appeared at notorious Jazz Age parties Shanghai Mermaid, Wit's End, and Dances of Vice, and have made a name for themselves as New York's premier live burlesque accompaniment through their residencies at the Slipper Room and Galapagos Art Space's Floating Kabarette, as well as appearances with Sugar Shack Burlesque and Harvest Moon's vaudeville productions. Members of the band have played with the Eddy Davis New Orleans Jazz Band, Les Paul, and the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus, and have performed at the annual Bix Beiderbecke festival near where the trumpet virtuoso died in Queens, NY. The Red Hook Ramblers are intent on preserving the music that permanently changed the American cultural landscape in the early part of the 20th Century and bringing live traditional jazz to new audiences around the world.
"Brooklyn's excellent Red Hook Ramblers make vintage jazz that conjures a delicious speakeasy vibe: You're just a step away from flappers, fancy shoes and illicit booze." – Time Out New York Magazine
"Said to be Brooklyn’s premier Dixieland band, the Red Hook Ramblers are animated and larger than life, and are as delightful to watch as they are to listen to. United by their collective passion for the time-honored musical genres of classic jazz, blues, spirituals and ragtime, the Ramblers take pride in performing this compelling music of a by-gone era."
- Brooklyn Independent Television, Neighborhood Beat

PRESENTA: DAMIAN SIQUEIROS:
LIFE AS A PERFORMANCE
Curated by Las Bellas Artes- NEW YORK, NY
A photographic series that belongs to the Life as an everyday performance project, gets its name from the trademark date for society to dictate what a couple should be. Damián Siqueiros uses digital photography as a medium to erase the boundaries between reality and fiction. His work thus produces images that are reminiscent of the aesthetics of Romantic paintings through processed light or the mise en scene of his characters. With Life as a performance, Damián explores the influence of society and religious institutions on a couple’s identity, construction, and perception. It seeks to create a dialogue between viewer and image, and bring into question one’s own identity; he continues his research on the use of the archetypical structures of classical painting in photography, to approach topics of relevance to contemporary society.
His formal language becomes both literal and metaphorical, as he works with the super-imposition of images and proposes identity (specially gender) as a “montage”. In the same line of thought, the change of perspective on the use of space is also a poetic way to express his will to make people reflect on how they see their own identity.
Of Mexican origin, Damián Siqueiros has already won numerous awards including the Coup de cœur award by Art Souterrain 2010, and he is one of the winners of the 2010 Xpose Canadian Association of Photographers and Illustrators in Communication (CAPIC) and Las Bellas Artes Art Contest 2009. Prestigious magazines including Vogue and Elle are using the aesthetic and artistic signature in their own photos.
Some of the work has been part of previous shows and some has been exclusively created for this exhibition. The exhibit design will be an installation in situ in the new gallery at Casa Mezcal and Michael Barakiva, theater director and producer, will present and introduce the artist and his work.
